Below is a sampler of recent statements by the Obama Administration’s designated front man in the Ebola non-crisis, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose impeccably leftist credentials include on-the-job training in governmental do-gooderism at Oberlin, Yale, Columbia, and New York City – the latter where he led the city’s crusade to make it illegal to eat unhealthy food or smoke. Keep in mind that his guy is an M.D., a scientist dedicated to separating empirical evidence from mere speculation and opinion.
“It is certainly possible that someone who has had contact with this patient could develop Ebola, but there is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here,” Frieden said at a news conference on 9/30. Frieden said any hospital that can isolate someone can treat a patient for Ebola. (italics added)
“If we take actions that seem like they may work, they may be the kind of solution to a complex problem that is quick, simple and wrong,” said Frieden in a press conference. (10/2/14) “The approach of isolating a country is that it’s going to make it harder to get help into that country.” That would enable disease to spread more widely and, ultimately, “potentially spread more to other countries in Africa and become more of a risk to us here,” Frieden added. In fact, “the only way to ensure Americans are safe from the virus is to care for people in the Ebola-ravaged countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia who have it,” he said. “The best way to protect ourselves is not to try to seal off these countries but to provide the kinds of services that are needed so that the disease is contained there,” Frieden said. “The only way to get to zero risk is to stop it there.” (italics added)
On 10/3, Frieden said airport screenings are reducing risks. “There are a lot of checks in place. It’s not perfect,” he said. Frieden said that the single confirmed Ebola case in the United States could be controlled. (italics added)
OK, there you have it. I have omitted lots of other soothing words from the director, all presented in that combination of impeccable grammar and Orwellian Newspeak that is the hallmark of the Obama administration’s obfuscatory skills, but you get the picture. Cliffnotes version: Everything is fine, nothing to worry about (before November 4), we can control the one case and we can easily absorb a bit of collateral damage here in the homeland. As for the many, many other cases that are virtually a 100% certainty of occurring, no assurances are given – large numbers of Americans may die. If you really want to ensure Americans are safe, we need to send gazillions of Obamadollars to provide care for everyone IN AFRICA. Time for another round of Quantitative Easing.
There. I feel better already.
