TORTURE AND ENHANCED-INTERROGATION ARE NOT SYNONYMS

Waterboarding, sleep deprivation, isolation, bombardment with agonizing sounds, religious and sexual humiliation, and other devices that do not permanently harm or impair the subject but are designed to make him uncomfortable enough to provide theretofore-withheld information, are enhanced interrogation.  Systematically chopping off one’s fingers or ears or other body parts, extracting fingernails or teeth with a pliers, and administering drugs that permanently alter or damage one’s brain, are torture.   If you do not understand the difference, you are, um, intellectually challenged.  If you know there is a difference but you consider it to be legally or morally insignificant, you are, at the very least, ignorant.  If you know the difference is indeed legally and morally significant, but you persist in arguing that all forms of enhanced interrogation are “torture,” you are a cynic.  If you insist upon giving out secret information that blurs the distinction between torture and enhanced interrogation, that exploits the intellectual or informational deficiencies of the general public, and that puts your political ideology ahead of the national security of your country, you are Dianne Feinstein or Barack Obama.

  1. Remember 9/11? Apparently it has slipped the collective mind of many of our fellow citizens, including some of our most powerful leaders.
